ATL5D Mixtape: Where Music Meets the Blockchain

Hahz, known in Philly as DJ Hahz or "Hahz the Hustler," was a master of the mixtape game. He built a thriving business by the age of 23, trapping the hottest new music from his Cadillac Escalade.  His hustle, selling his own mixtapes and those of others, made him a daily $4,000-$10,000,  earning him a reputation as the go-to guy for the newest songs in Philadelphia during the Meek Mill freestyle era.

While many of his peers made millions the streets, Hahz saw a bigger vision. He recognized the power of the internet and the growing popularity of online music distribution. This foresight led him to a unique approach to mixtape selling:  He bought CDs in bulk at local computer shows, creating his own mixtapes for a mere $0.3 a piece.  

"I used to park on South Street and sell mixtapes from the passenger seat of my truck," he recalls, "then I became hot on the block, and Total Sports even let me sell inside their store. I sold mixtapes to Fabolous, Pharrell, Paul Pierce, and other music legends – Paul Pierce even tipped me $100 during NBA All-Star Weekend!"

As DJ Hahz, he built a formidable reputation, working out of his Uptown Philly house, equipped with eight CD towers and a fast internet connection. This allowed him to put new mixtapes on the streets of Philly faster than anyone else, even beating NYC, where the mixtape scene was booming. Local bootleggers began working for Hahz rather than making the long trip to NYC for the same product.

When DJ Drama's legal troubles in Atlanta over mixtape sales caught his attention, Hahz decided to change his game.  He traded the hustle of the streets for a new adventure, moving to Atlanta in 2007 and launching his internet career. 

Musical Legacy

Hahz's grandfather is Samuel Benskin a pioneer jazz pianist, bandleader, conductor, arranger, and songwriter whose influence resonated across decades of music history. 

A virtuoso at the piano, Benskin achieved a #1 chart hit before the Motown era, showcasing his remarkable talent and prominence during a key period of American music.

His entrepreneurial spirit matched his musical brilliance, founding Benskin Enterprises, which included Dery Records. This venture demonstrated his ability to master both the artistic and business aspects of the industry, further solidifying his status as a visionary in jazz.

Benskin's long and dynamic career saw him collaborate with a diverse range of artists, including the legendary Sade, illustrating his ability to fuse jazz with contemporary genres and adapt to changing musical landscapes. His versatility as a musician and arranger helped shape the sound of jazz during its golden age, influencing generations of musicians to come.
